If you're staying within walking distance of Happo-one or Wadano and skiing the same mountain most days, they usually are. If you're in Echoland or Misorano, want to ski Cortina one day and Iwatake the next, or plan to eat anywhere outside walking distance, a car is the difference between a good trip and a frustrating one. Below: which companies deliver to your door, what a Hakuba winter fleet actually comes with, and the licence rules that catch people out at the rental counter. ## Do you need a car in Hakuba? Honest answer: not always. **You probably don't** if you're walking distance from Happo-one or Wadano, skiing one mountain most days, and eating locally. The Happo and Wadano shuttles run frequently through peak season, and the inter-resort shuttle connects the main areas. **You probably do if any of these apply:** - You're staying in Echoland, Misorano, Goryu, Hakuba47 or Tsugaike, where shuttle coverage thins out quickly. - You want to ski more than one or two of the Hakuba Valley resorts. Cortina is roughly 35 minutes north of Happo, Tsugaike about 20. The inter-resort shuttle runs on its timetable, not yours. - You're a group of four or more. Splitting one car four ways beats four separate taxi fares, and taxis in the valley are heavily oversubscribed in January and February — waits of an hour or more at peak times are normal. - You want a day trip. The snow monkeys at Jigokudani, Matsumoto Castle and Zenko-ji are comfortable day trips by car and awkward by bus. - You're travelling with small children, or with more gear than you want to carry onto a shuttle. **The one thing that isn't negotiable:** if you're driving in Hakuba between December and March, you need 4WD or AWD with winter tyres. Not all-seasons. Every local Hakuba company fits winter tyres as standard; the national operators at Narita and Haneda often do not, so you have to request them and confirm at booking. ## Rent in Hakuba, or pick up at the airport? **Pick up in Hakuba if** you're arriving by train or bus and only want the car once you're here. Local companies fit 4WD, winter tyres and ski racks as standard, they know the roads, and most will deliver to your chalet. You skip four to five hours of unfamiliar motorway driving each way. **Pick up at the airport if** you're landing at Narita, Haneda or Chubu Centrair and want the car for the whole trip, or you're combining Hakuba with somewhere else in Japan. Book the winter tyre option explicitly — it is usually a paid add-on and it is not always fitted by default on a car collected in Tokyo. **Pick up at Nagano Station if** you're taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo and driving the last hour yourself. Toyota, Nissan and Times all have branches within a short walk of the station. It's also the option to choose if you want to drop the car somewhere other than where you collected it. They offer compact cars through to minivans, accommodation and station pick-up services, English support, and year-round reservations. **Navigation tip:** The built-in navigation systems in many Japanese rental cars don't always recognise Hakuba's smaller roads or chalet addresses. For the easiest journey, use Google Maps and search for your accommodation by name rather than by street address. ## What you legally need to drive in Japan Japan recognises **only** International Driving Permits issued under the **1949 Geneva Convention**. A 1968 Vienna Convention permit is not valid here, and neither is a digital copy, a photograph, or a translation app. It must be the physical booklet. **If your licence is from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia or one of the other 80-plus 1949 signatories:** get an IDP from your national motoring association before you fly. Check the issue date reads 19 September 1949. **If your licence is from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan:** an IDP will not work in Japan. You need your domestic licence plus an official Japanese translation, issued by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) or your embassy or consulate in Japan. Allow one to two weeks and roughly ¥6,000. Rental counters will turn you away without it — this catches European guests out every season. **If your licence is Italian:** Italy issues both 1949 and 1968 permits. Specifically request the 1949 version. **At the counter you must produce all three:** the IDP (or official translation), your original home licence, and your passport. Winter tyres are the more important half of the answer — a front-wheel-drive car on proper winter tyres will manage the main valley roads, while a 4WD on all-season tyres will not. Every local Hakuba company fits both as standard. If you're collecting a car in Tokyo or Nagano, request winter tyres explicitly and confirm it at booking. **Is it worth hiring a car in Hakuba?** For a group of four or more staying outside Happo or Wadano, almost always. For a couple staying two minutes from the Happo gondola and skiing one mountain, usually not. The tipping point is whether you want to ski more than one resort or eat anywhere that isn't within walking distance. **Where can I pick up a rental car in Hakuba?** Most local companies deliver to your accommodation across Happo, Wadano, Echoland and Misorano, or meet you at JR Hakuba Station or the Happo bus terminal.
