Hakuba Bike Rental

Bike rental in Hakuba is spread across eight shops, and they are not interchangeable. Two are counters at the station where you walk up and ride away. Two sit at the Iwatake gondola for downhill riding. One will bring bikes to where you're staying. Opening dates, prices and whether you can book ahead all vary, so here is the whole picture in one place.

Repairs and servicing if something goes wrong mid-trip.

Mountain bikes, kids' mountain bikes and e-bikes.
Walk in, get the bike fitted at the counter, ride out — the best option if you decide to ride on the morning.
An outdoor activity information desk and a café are on the same site.
Guided mountain bike tours run in autumn.

Arriving by train and want a bike today — Ojisan-no-mise or Hakuba Sanroku Tours, both on the station forecourt. Walk-in only.
Getting around the village on an e-bike — Lion Adventure at the Happo-one crossing, or Ojisan-no-mise.
Bikes delivered to where you're staying — Spicy delivers, Rhythm can arrange driver pick-up. Nobody else does either.
Riding the Iwatake downhill trails — Spicy at the gondola base, or Service Shop 360° on the same field.
A current Specialized full-suspension bike and proper armour — Rhythm MTB in Happo. Book ahead; free cancellation up to 48 hours.
Riding with children — Rhythm, Spicy, Lion Adventure and Hakuba47 all keep kids' bikes. The station counters generally don't.

E-bikes and town bikes.
No reservations — walk up and ride.
It's the souvenir shop directly opposite the station exit, run by the same people who rent crampons to Daisekkei climbers in summer.
Some e-bikes in the Omachi–Hakuba–Otari network can be returned to a different cycle station. Ask when you collect.

Closing days are irregular, so ring ahead if the timing matters.

Hakuba47 Mountain Sports Park rents mountain bikes and kids' bikes at its own MTB park in Kamishiro. 24196-47 Kamishiro. Tel 0261-75-3533.
Service Shop 360° rents mountain bikes and kids' bikes on the Iwatake field, next to Spicy. 12086 Hokujo. Tel 0261-72-4669.
Both are worth calling if Spicy and Rhythm are sold out on an August weekend.

Take the e-bike. The valley floor around Hakuba Station is flat and easy, but everything worth reaching — Happo, Wadano, Echoland, Iwatake — is uphill from it, and the climbs are long rather than steep. On a town bike you arrive at the gondola too tired to enjoy it. On an e-bike the same ride is a pleasant twenty minutes.

The only real case for an ordinary bike is a short flat loop around the station and the rice paddies, or riding with young children who'll set the pace anyway.

Two operators will come to you. Spicy delivers bikes to accommodation in the village, and Rhythm can arrange driver pick-up when you collect. Ōide Park — the suspension bridge and thatched hut with the Alps behind. The most photographed spot in the valley, and flat from anywhere in the village.
Hakuba Jump Stadium — ride to the base, take the lift up, and look straight down the in-run the 1998 Olympians used.
Iwatake gondola station — roughly 5km from Hakuba Station, about 30 minutes on a town bike and less on an e-bike.
Aoki Lake — around 11km south of the station, about an hour. The best half-day ride here, and the water is genuinely swimmable in August.
The Himekawa river path — flat, quiet and shaded. The right choice on a hot afternoon or with children.

Helmets have been a legal best-effort requirement for all cyclists in Japan since April 2023. Every shop lends them. Wear one.
Rental season runs roughly from late April to early November. Outside that, most shops switch their fleet over to ski gear.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, so ride in the morning.
Bikes are ridden on the left, and village roads are shared with tour buses. The riverside and farm-road routes are far more pleasant than Route 148.
